What is CBG?

CBG (cannabigerol) is one of many naturally occurring compounds found in the cannabis plant. It is called a "minor cannabinoid" by scientists and cannabis growers because it is usually found in smaller amounts than THC and CBD. Even though it's not very well known, CBG is special among cannabinoids because it is an important part of the biosynthetic process that makes other cannabinoids.

Chemical Structure of CBG

The compound CBG is a cannabinoid, which means it can work with the body's endocannabinoid system. Unlike some of the other cannabinoids, CBG does not get you high or make you feel intoxicated when you use it. It can connect to different cell receptors, but not as strongly as other major cannabinoids because of the way its chemicals are structured.

The main structure of CBG is made up of terpenophenolic building blocks, which is typical for cannabis. The cannabinoid compound that makes up CBG comes from cannabigerolic acid (CBGA). Not only is CBGA the parent molecule of CBG, but other main cannabinoids also come from it.

The Role of CBGA in Cannabinoid Formation

CBGA is often referred to as the “mother” of cannabinoids. This is because, as a cannabis plant matures, enzymes transform CBGA into three key acid forms:

  • Tetrahydrocannabinolic acid (THCA)
  • Cannabidiolic acid (CBDA)
  • Cannabichromenic acid (CBCA)

Each of these acid forms can be converted into THC, CBD, and CBC, respectively, through a process called decarboxylation. Only a small fraction of the original CBGA becomes CBG by the time the cannabis plant reaches full maturity.

Evolution of CBG in Cannabis

Certain enzymes change CBGA into other cannabis acids as the plant grows. This means that the amount of CBG left in most fully grown cannabis plants is very low, often less than 1%. To get more CBG, growers must either pick their plants early or create strains that are especially made to hold more of it. As interest in minor cannabinoids has grown, this method has become more popular.

CBG Vs Other Cannabinoids

The basic structure and way that CBG is made are similar to those of other cannabinoids, but the way it works with the body's cell receptors is different. While THC and CBD are much more common, CBG tends to play a more subtle but important part.

CBG, CBD, and THC: How They Relate

The production of THC and CBD is directly dependent on the conversion of CBGA as the plant develops.

  • CBG is present in young cannabis plants, or specially bred mature plants.
  • THC and CBD develop after CBGA is transformed by enzymes into their respective acid forms, then decarboxylated.

Put simply, without CBGA—and subsequently CBG—neither THC nor CBD would exist in the plant. This is why CBG is sometimes called the stem cell or parent cannabinoid.

Other Related Cannabinoids

Cannabis contains a lot of different cannabinoids, and they are all made in similar ways, starting with CBGA. Some of these are CBC, CBN, and THCV. Each of these chemicals has its own biological role in the plant. Still, the process starts with CBGA changing through enzymes and sometimes being exposed to things in the world, like light and heat.

Production and Extraction of CBG

Young cannabis plants or types that have been bred to have a lot of CBG can be used to get it. Because the concentration is usually low, it takes special techniques to get the most out of the extraction. Because CBG can't be changed back into THC or CBD, the best ways to get material that is high in CBG are to pick it early or use genetic selection.

The extract is often put into different products, like oils and infused items, but CBG is still a small part of the total cannabinoid profile in commercial cannabis.

CBG and the Endocannabinoid System

Cannabinoids, including CBG, all interact with the endocannabinoid system. The endocannabinoid system is a complicated network of receptors in people and animals that control many bodily functions. Different cannabinoids bind to these receptors in different ways, leading to different effects and interactions.

In this way, CBG is different from THC and CBD because it has a lower affinity for the main cannabinoid receptors. This means that even though it is part of the endocannabinoid system, it doesn't have as big of an impact on things.

CBG is a cannabinoid found in cannabis that doesn't get you high. It's important to note that other main cannabinoids are made from CBG. The trip starts with CBGA and ends with the more well-known THC, CBD, and CBC as the plant naturally grows older.
